What is our motive 1 Thessalonians 2:6

Posted: October 8, 2010 in 1 Thessalonians

1 Thessalonians 2:6 Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.

Paul Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, the word glory here is the Greek word

δοξα doxa dox’-ah from the base of 1380; glory (as very apparent), in a wide application (literal or figurative, objective or subjective):–dignity, glory(-ious), honor, praise, worship.

I believe Paul was not just saying we don’t need your money or anyone else’s, he was also saying we’re not seeking glory or honor, or praise, we’re seeking to teach you of the love of Jesus Christ, we’re seeking to bring souls to the Kingdom of God. Then Paul go’s on to say when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. Paul say’s even though we are entitled to some compensation as apostles we don’t want to be a burden on you, we don’t have to be a burden on you, we can pay our own way. As he says in 1Th 2:9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

Paul and other apostles were clearly entitled to compensation 1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

But Paul was saying, we don’t want to burden you, we want this to be as easy as possible, no excuses, no distractions. Just because you can get money out of someone doesn’t always mean you should.

I think we should take  1Th 2:6 as a great example of how we should conduct ourselves while we’re spreading the gospel of Christ. It should be clear to others that our only focus is God the Father, and that our love is to them who we seek to bring to the Kingdom of God. We don’t want anything in return, we’re not doing it for money or praise, or honor, we’re doing it because we love Jesus Christ. That’s our motive, if our motive is Love then we’re doing it right!
